No Pain, No Gain
Information can save lives - especially when information that can benefit others is shared openly. The Covid 19 pandemic is a recent, global-scale example of this - where nations globally shared genome mapping, virus symptoms and case numbers internationally.
However, the term 'data' often masks the fact that information is not neutral. Instead, it is interpreted by both the sender and the recipient. 'Data' is only part of communication, and the interpretation of meaning is socially, culturally, intellectually, politically and linguistically conditioned.
To explore this idea further, this poster translates the "No pain, no gain" idiom into all the languages available in Google Translator and then back into English. The poster shows how the phrase's meaning gradually distorts, becoming unrecognisable, and eventually, "There is no green person".
